Golden hour selfies: when and how
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerGolden hour is roughly the hour after sunrise and before sunset, when the sun is low and the light is soft and warm. Face the light for a glow, or put it behind you for a rim of light around your hair.
When it is
It changes with location and season. Weather apps and the Weather app’s sunrise and sunset times help you plan.
Two looks
- Facing the sun: warm, even light on your face. Look slightly away from the sun so you don’t squint.
- Sun behind you: glowing outline. Tap your face to set focus and exposure so you don’t become a silhouette.
Tips
- Turn the flash off.
- Shoot a burst; the light changes fast.
- Clean the lens; flare and haze show up more against the sun.
Questions
What about cloudy days?
Clouds soften light all day, which is also flattering.
