Portrait Lighting effects on iPhone explained
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerPortrait Lighting changes how the light on your face looks in Portrait photos: Natural keeps it real, Studio brightens the face, Contour adds shadows, Stage puts you on black, and Mono options go black and white. You can change it after taking the photo.
The effects
- Natural: as shot.
- Studio: brighter, even face.
- Contour: more defined shadows.
- Stage / Stage Mono: subject on a black background.
- High-Key Mono: black and white on white.
Change it later
Open the photo in Photos, tap Edit, and slide through the lighting effects.
Best results
Good light, a clear outline and some distance from the background. Stage effects can struggle with hair edges.
Questions
